evaluation
This is my evaluation of my magazine Shockwave.
my magazine is called shockwave, ive been inspired by other magazines such as NME, Q, kerrang etc. my magazine is a rock/indie magazine. in my reaserch ive found these magazine are very popular with the british audiance, NME have 40,948 magazines in circulation in 2009. kerrang have 43,000 in circulation in 2009.
my shockwave magazine will focus on rock/indie bands such as Muse, kasabian paramore etc.
Theme
my theme has been inspired by magazines such as NME and Kerrang, i have used colours too help create this theme, red and black, these colours clash which i really like this is very simaller feel to kerrangs black and yellow or NME red and white. i have stuck with the same theme throughout, i have alterd them slightly for each page, but the theme is still very recognasable.
Title
The title Shockwave gives a good impression of what the magazine represents.it is very clear this magazine foucuses on rock music. The word Shockwave gives i chaotic, dangours feel to it, which was inspired by Kerrangs name.
The photos ive chosen are to give an impression of a rock group, that fits in with the magazine. i really like the photos, they blend in with the artical, they look very natural to be place there. Ive used from photo of there studio, with them playing there instruments, which works really well into making band have more depth. The photos give a real look of a band which ive noticed my rock/indie magazines do. The band like to look very real and rough such as muse, biffy clyro etc. i chose black and white photos on the double page artical so they blend on with the page, when i tried other colours it didnt feel right and took alot a way from the artical. The limited colour of black and red makes it more colourful and stands out.
This photo and many other from NME magazine have been a big inspiration to let the picture big the biggest part, ive use the style in my contents page, it makes the page look a lot more natural if the photo is this main feature.

I've kept true to what indie/rock fans with the mise en scene. like this magazine i have the picture of the band in a crazy or cool looking way. i noticed in these magazines the indie/rock bands keep very cool and relaxed in there photo shoots unlike a R&B who would do a pose. on my front cover ive stuck to the tradatonal method of the rock band photo shoot to make them look very relaxed but serious, but i have broken the traditonal lines of a music magazine with a long shot, you can see all of the members bodys which isnt typical for magazines, many magazines use a medium shot like below.
photos
i have used various photos from outside against a brick wall to a music studio. i have keep the photos typical for a music magazine expept for my front cover were i have taken a long shot of the band, i decided to do this because i beleve its a good establishing shot for the location, and it gives a view of the full band better.
my contents page i used a close up of one of the band members against a brick wall, i also added a sun flare behind the add to the photo.
my double page artcal i have used three pictures the main one of all three band men three band members from a diffrent angle. another of the drummer playing drums in the studio and a simaler photo to my contents page of a diffrent person against the wall. i used a few photos to give a feel of what this band members are like. i have used black & white photos for the double page artical, because i wanted to limit the colour, so the colour left would really stand out, i beleve this work very well and looks very professonal.

Font
The fonts i have used is very typical for a rock magazine , i chose the fonts so it is very clear of the genre of my magazine. On my double page artical for the band Decode i have used the theme of numbers used instead of letters. I have done this because it relects the band name decode. i have used the colour of my theme black and red, im very pleased with my theme of numbers because i think it fits very well into the band and the image of a rock magazine. I chose a gritty, underground rock theme font that fits well with the style of my magazine.
On my front cover i have added four words below the title Decode. such as Rehab, Drugs, tour, new album. i have done this because these words are very typical of the rock genre. i used them to draw in the readers, they are enigmas that you have to read to find out.
Contents page
For my contents page i have used very plain colour, black because i wanted the picture to be the main foucus of the page, and i didnt want the theme to become a distraction, the feel of the theme is still there but very suttle. the font is still very gritty and looks cool how it written on the wall, that adds to the feel of the rock image. the boady language in my contents page comes a cross as very cool and relax, not look to crazy or in your face.
my contents page is very simaler to this one, i have made the photo of the rock star the center focus, ive done this so the fans will be drawn to read/see whats in this magazine about there band or themselves. This photo has been a great influence with helping my design my contents page.
Mise en scene
i have very casual cloths, with show then to be a gritter band, not too botherd they look perfect. each person is dressed diffrent, but all fit into the band, i have done this because i want to give them all a diffrent attitude and by the cloths and the way they stand you can really see the diffrence in them.
I chose a brick wall behind the band. i believe it gives a good feel of rough and gritty the band are, it was inspired by a NME magazine cover i researched. i really like how the mise en scene where so i did something along the same line, with a diffrent feel.
the mise en scene is a big part in communicating with the audiance, i wanted with the fist look to know this is a indie/rock magazine. i believe ive achevied this look by following typical mise en scene themes as other rock magazines.
I have one of the band members holding a cigerette, because i noticed it was very popular in rock/indie magazines. I beleve it fits in well also giving a better feel of the band, it shows them living up to the traditonal rockstar sterotype.

Shockwave has the rock theme to it on its own, with the added font, the title comes across very bold and stands out with its red colour.
Double page artical
For my double page artical ive kept it very informal using slag and swearwords, because the magazines target is a younger, teen audiance so i want the reader to feel comfertable in reading, like they are talking to someone younger whos there age. If i made the artical formal i beleive it would have lost a younger audiance. i ve used captions from what the band have said in big bold red writting auch as "music has too grow someting has to change to keep it intresting" i chose this because it shows attitude from the band and will draw attention to make people read the full artical, in my research ive noticed many magazine do this. The photos ive chosen are to give an impression of a rock group, that fits in with the magazine. i really like the photos, they blend in with the artical, they look very natural to be place there. a big help in discovering a theme was the kerrang and NME theme,
improvements
I beleve there could be some improvement to make the magazine even better, such as
more photos of the band in diffrent locations or more photos of them in the studio would give a better feel of the band and who they are. although the photos do fit very well a wider range would benifit so much more to the magazine.
bigger sub titles to introduce other bands and diffrent colours.it would permote other bands if they didnt like decode thers other options for them to read about.
Ive learnt alot from making this magazine, and how much thought and detail can make something so much more professonal and better. the photo shoot was very good in showing me how spefic the photos must be to look professonal and natural.
writting the double page artical was hard but was worth the final result, i learnt to make certain information more important than to go off to less important subjects and how to make each band member from words grow a personlity.
ive reaserch many diffrent companies for which would be the best to publish my magazine, and i beleive music bank records would be. they have many root into publishing and making music of many diffrent genres.http;//musicbank.org/
overall im very pleased with my final product of my magazine shockwave, and i think ive caputred a good feel of rock style like other magazines have, the layout, theme and photos have all added to the magazine and i have acheived what i wanted with the magazine shockwave
